All athletes respond differently to a brain injury like a concussion. The athlete(s) needs to be seen by medical experts who can diagnose and provided proper care instructions to protect your player from further injury and trauma to the brain.
Coach and Manager Responsibility:
Complete - On-Field Injury Report
Contact parents to inform of injury and arrange the transportation.
Provide a copy of "On-Field Injury Report" to athlete’s parent/guardian.
Provide a copy of "On-Field Injury Report" to Ilija Cokrlic at doc@mandansoccer.com.
Why should an athlete report their symptoms?
If an athlete has a concussion, their brain needs time to heal. While an athlete’s brain is still healing, they are more likely to have another concussion. Repeat concussions can increase the time it takes to recover. In rare cases, repeat concussions in young athletes can result in brain swelling and/or permanent damage of their brain. Then can even be fatal.
Will wearing a Protective Headgear or Head guard prevent a concussion?
Any protective headgear only reduces G Level impact, which inherently may assist in the brain, reducing its impact against the inside of the skull. A severe concussion may still result, with an impact to the head, with protective headgear.
“My child seems OK, can we just rest and return to play without being cleared?”
If an on-field injury report is filed by a Coach and/or manager at the time of injury, then clearance to play must come from your primary care physician or specialist, which will require documentation.
